Daniel Sheppard had lost his original discharge papers from the Navy and got this certificate when he applied for his Civil War pension.

Daniel Sheppard in his early 50's

Daniel Sheppard in his early 50's about the time of the marriage of his daughter, Emily Elizabeth, to Peter S. Traverso, Jr. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Cotton Screwmen that eventually became the second oldest union in Texas. Screwmen were stevedores who loaded cotton bales onto ships in the port of Galveston. Their screws compressed the bales so more could be compactly stored in the holds of ships. He and his wife, Mary, had five children.

Letter to Daniel Sheppard from his sister Persis Augusta ( 1838 - 1922 ) who mentions that her widowed sister, Mary Jean "Jane" ( b. 1841 ) was living with her. Persis thanks Daniel for money he sent her and discusses his birthdate as recorded in the family Bible.

 

 

Mary Persis Sheppard

Mary Persis Sheppard, the niece of Daniel Sheppard and daughter of his younger brother, Henry, who immigrated to Ireland. Mary Persis was born in 1882 and died in 1940. She married Edward Smith in 1910, a sailor, and they moved to London in 1911.

Christopher Sheppard

Photo of Christopher Sheppard, the nephew of Daniel Sheppard. Christopher was the son of Daniel Sheppard's brother, Henry. Christopher Sheppard ( 1891 - 1935 ) pictured with his wife, Cahterine O' Connell who died in 1959. Christopher worked as a longshoreman.

Daniel Sheppard

Portrait photograph of Daniel Sheppard perhaps in the 1880's when he would have been in his 40's. Daniel Sheppard was prominent in the Brotherhood of Cotton Screwmen, a specialize trade union group of stevedores who loaded ships with cargos of cotton bales. They used scew devices to compress the cotton bales so as to load more into ships. The Brotherhood passed a resolution commemorating him on his death and contributed to help his widow with funeral expenses. His position in the union enabled both his son-in-law, Peter Traverso, Jr., and his grandson, Daniel Traverso, to become cotton screwmen.
